The double knotting construction used on each amber teething necklace, means that if the necklace is broken, only one bead will be lost. We feel that this is essential when using jewellery on babies and children.
How does it work?
The use of Amber as a source of traditional healing has been used for centuries.
Amber is not a stone, it is fossilised resin, which will warm to the body’s temperature. This means amber jewellery feels light and is easy to wear. Most children will not even notice they are wearing a necklace.
As amber is soft, it must not be chewed on, as a ‘teether’ would. Teething necklaces are all double knotted, which ensures that if the necklace breaks, only one bead will be lost.
It is important to choose Baltic Amber, if you are hoping for therapeutic benefits. The lighter and more milky the colour (or less polished), the higher the succinic acid level in the Amber. Dominican Amber (from Mexico) contains little-to-no succinic acid – the essential ‘ingredient’ of Baltic Amber.
It is said that when warmed by the skin, Baltic Amber will release trace amounts of healing oils into the bloodstream through the skin.
Having been sold for years in pharmacies throughout Europe (particularly Germany, Switzerland and Austria), as a traditional, safe remedy to assist with teething, Australian’s are just starting to catch on to the benefits of amber.
Whilst essentially sold as 'teething' necklaces, many parents are telling us they are now purchasing necklaces for their older children complaining of 'growing pains' and parents themselves are purchasing adult necklaces to assist with headaches, should, neck and jaw pain, and bracelets to assist with arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Which one to choose?
In terms of efficacy, the lighter the colour and more opaque the bead, the higher the content of Succinic Acid. This means that the colours in the Butter family, along with the lighter semi-polished beads, have more Succinic acid than darker colours.
We do not recommend purchasing a very dark colour (often sold by other suppliers as dark cherry) if you are hoping to gain any therapeutic benefit, as the Succinic Acid levels are said to be negligible.
Most youth necklaces can be sourced up to 14", so if we don't have your size or colour in stock, please contact us and we'll let you know if we can get it in.
Our most popular colours are Butter, Moonlight and Sunshine and the most popular size is 12-12.5" (31cm).
Sizing:
We're always being asked which size to get! Our advice is as follows:
As we’ve mentioned, amber teething necklaces are designed to be worn, but NOT chewed on.
After fitting hundreds of babies, our recommendation is that when the necklace rests on the collar bone (which admittedly, can sometimes be hard to find under gorgeous rolls!) it can usually make it to the bottom of the chin, but not easily into the mouth.
Of course, preferred length is a personal choice, but these measurements are given as if the necklace was resting on the collar bone when worn, and is the length we feel is the most safe. At this length, a child should not be able to get the necklace into their mouth easily.
For average sized young babies/infants (up to around 2 years old), 12" - 12.5" will often be fine. If you have a petite baby, they may be more suited to the smaller sizes 11"-11.5" or 11.5-12".
For older children, 2-4 years, 12.5"-13" and 4-6 years, 13"-13.5" would be our recommendation.
The easiest way of measuring correctly is to drape a tape measure, piece of string, or even your own necklace around your child to your preferred length, then measure that. Be sure that you measure it as if it is hanging naturally around the back of the neck, and not pulled tightly. The necklace should hang at the collarbone.
