Tips and Tricks: 7 Home Remedies to Try

There will always be days when members of the family (us, included) get sick.  But before getting relief from all sorts of meds out there (and spending time, energy, and money on the process of getting those from the drugstore), here are some homeopathic remedies worth trying.*  These are all natural, with ingredients readily available.

 

1.  Lemon  

Lemon is known for boatloads of health benefits.  According to Linda Wagner, a nutrition and lifestyle coach, lemon water is good for digestion problems, excellent for skin care, aids in dental care, cures throat infections, good for weight loss, controls high blod pressure, assists in curing rheumatism, reduces fever, and acts as a blood purifier to treat cholera or malaria.  Click here for details.

2. Ginger

Ginger is also known to have some pretty remarkable health generating qualities helpful in colon cancer prevention, morning and motion sickness remedy, reduction of pain and inflammation, heartburn relief, cold and flu prevention and treatment, migraine relief, menstrual cramp relief, and prevention of diabetic nephropathy  (kidney damage).  Click here for details.

 

Recipe:

  • 1/2 inch knob of ginger sliced thinly or grated
  • lemon
  • Stevia to taste

Simply pour boiling water over the ginger, let steep for about 5mins then add lemon juice and stevia to taste.

 

3.  Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a wonderful old-timer home remedy, reported to be an effective cure for allergies, sinus infections, acne, high cholesterol, flu, chronic fatigue, candida, acid reflux, sore throats, contact dermatitis, arthritis, and gout. Apple Cider Vinegar also breaks down fat and is widely used to lose weight. For acne/pimple treatment, here’s the recipe:

  • 1 part apple cider vinegar
  • 3 parts water

Let it sit. Then with a cotton swab, rub the mixture across the  face. Let sit for fifteen minutes and rinse with cold water. take a Q-tip and place the mixture on the acne and let stay for the night.

 

4.  Honey and Cinnamon:

Both honey and cinnamon have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties.  This mix is going to be effective to get rid of that dreaded ‘I think I’m getting sick’ feeling.

  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

 

This can be used as tea or as fruit dips.

 

5.  Basil

This sweet, fragrant herb can be grown in pots.  Aside from keeping your food yummy, basil can provide relief for headaches and other pains.  To use, rub crushed leaves on your temples to relieve headaches. Pour boiling water over basil leaves for a pain-relieving footbath.

6.  Lemon-Honey

When sore throat attacks the kiddos, this recipe provides immediate relief.  This feels so nice going down your throat.

Recipe:

  • Heat 1-cup water
  • add 1-tbsp lemon juice
  • add 1&1/2-tbsp honey
7.  Mint
Mint is said to be ideal for treating the collywobbles, which you might know as butterflies in the stomach.

To use, sip tea made with fresh peppermint leaves to soothe stomach cramps, nausea, and flatulence. For a natural decongestant, place a fistful of mint leaves in a shallow bowl and cover with boiling water. Lean over it, drape a towel over your head, and breathe the steam.
